CHARACTERS in THE BACCHAE

M DIONYSUS: divine son of Zeus and Semele, also called Bromius or Bacchus.
God of wine, reverly and theatre. A font of blessings on those who worship him, but a vengeful nemy for thos who do not.
M TIRESIAS: an old blind prophet
Accused of being self-serving nd wanting to decalre a new god so that he can make sacrifices (and earn more money), he sees that this new god could be a formidable enermy.
M CADMUS: grandfather of both Dionysus and Pentheus, an old man
Like Tiresias, he decides he worship the new god, but more out of fear than any true realization of Dionysus' godhood, which he has denied.
M PENTHEUS: young king of Thebes, grandson of Cadmus, cousin of Dionysus
In today's world we would classify Pentheus as a totally conservative, right-wing (bordering on fascistic) leader. He believs he is right, and uses his might to back it up. Not a strong intellectual, he easily falls uder Dionysus spell of madness and suggestion.
F AGAVE: mother of Pentheus, daughter of Cadmus, sister of Semele
When we first see her she is still under the influence of the madness induced by the Bacchic rituals, but we come to see her as a tragic figure. Often Greek tragedies are titled for the tragic figure or for the chorus; Agave is in bot categories, and it is her realization of blood-kin that she killed that fulfills a requirement for Greek tragedy.
M FIRST MESSENGER a cattle herder
A laborer, who is easily swayed; he believes what his eyes tell him, but is easily convinced to try to capture Agave to help his king, Pentheus.
M A SOLDIER, an attendant on Pentheus
At first, he is one of those solders who follows order unquestioningly. But when he sees the horror of Pentheus' death, he renounces his life and flees, hoping to forget what he has witnessed.
F CHORUS LEADER
One of the Bacchants, yet still in the city, able to see what is happening and judge; not fully taken over by the Bacchic madness.
F CHORUS OF BACCHAE:3 worshippers of Dionysus, also called Maenads or Bacchants.
Absolute followers of Dionysus, who sings his praises.
