14. Finding Purpose in a Fleeting Life

...

Unless we participate actively
in the progress of our species’ further evolution
we have no reason to continue with our lives

When younger, death has no meaning for us
and is a distant, inconceivable event.
We feel immortal.

Around the age of 25, many experience as I did a feeling of mortality.

At 30 with what seemed to be
a large portion of my life already gone
(too much of it spent in classrooms
regurgitating trivialities
to professors with
fill-in-the-blank mentalities
it all seemed pretty pointless.
We go through too much just to die so young.

And now, approaching 40...
life is as fleeting as the shooting star we are not certain we saw
There is not enough time to do all I want to do--
to see all the things, to read all the books,
view all the paintings and sculptures and films and plays,
and think about it all and relate it all--
there is no time for that
or time to sleep and dream of another world where
everything is possible.

We can’t be individuals
aspiring to earthly height;
there is no point--it ends in death.

We must instead aspire to
teaching and gaining knowledge
to pass on--hence the continuing evolution.
I speak of freedom
from the expressionist madhouse
where insane inmates constantly breed
slaves and soldiers
babies cry as mothers moan
in sex and labor
fathers groan in
endless ejaculations
a toss of the dice
a split of the atom
can end our future--we must not allow it

evolution must continue
lack of longevity is an obstacle to overcome
we must work quickly
or remain the same endangered species.
